First Generation

1. Samuel Taylor1 Barnes(184) was born in New Jersey October 1846.

He married Charlotte unknown 1870. Charlotte was born in Pennsylvania February 1846. (Additional notes for Charlotte unknown(185)) On the 1870 census (M593-869 njs, p.34) Samuel is listed as Taylor Barnes age 28 with Charlotte age 22. He has a daughter, Mary J. age 9 (IF ages are correct making him 18 & Charlotte 13 when she was born assuming Charlotte is the mother).

In the 1880 census Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 212A, Samuel (age 32) is living with his wife Charlotte (age 32), Jennie (age 16), Nettie (age 9), and Martha (age 3).

In the 1900 census Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 8, Samuel (age 53) is living with his wife Chorlote (age 54), daughter Martha Moore (age 28) noted as widowed, grand children Edna Barnes (age 8), Myrtle Moore (age 3), and Russell Moore (age 4 months). They have been married for 30 years and have had 5 children with 3 living at the time of the census. Samuel has the occupation of day laborer and they rent their home.

Samuel Taylor Barnes and Charlotte unknown had the following children:

child 2 i. Jennie2 Barnes(186) was born Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ 1864.

child 3 ii. Nettie Frances Barnes(187) was born Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ July 1872. Nettie died about 1908 Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ. She married Franklin Owen Godown in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, January 25, 1890. Franklin was born Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ July 16, 1870. Frank (age 1) is listed in the 1870 census with his family. Franklin(188) was the son of Jacob C Godown and Caroline Louisa Chapman.

Franklin died February 26, 1943 Flemington, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 72 years of age. Frank took his own life shortly after taking his wife's. In a Flemington news article dated Tuesday March 2, 1943, states that the bodies had been dead since friday. Saturdays mail remained unopened. He was an antigue repairman and a cabnet maker and she was a private music instructor.

Death date is based on an article in the Courier-News of Bridgewater, New Jersey dated March 17, 1944. Is about a suit brought by Bessie's relatives for the estate of Frank and Bessie totaling $18,000. Frank supposedly had taken his wifes life and then took his own by severing an artury in his leg. No formal investigation was done. In the 1900 census page 10a, she is listed as having one child that is no longer living.

Father was born Pa and Mother was born in NJ.
