ASHTON Family

First Generation

1. John Rake1 Ashton was born in Pennsylvania October 30, 1836. John died April 4, 1897 in Berwick, Columbia Co, PA, at 60 years of age. Buried in Pine Grove Cemetery Columbia Co Pennsylvania

He married Sarah Jane Bishop in Pennsylvania, about 1856. Sarah was born in Pennsylvania 1840. Sarah died July 16, 1893 in Berwick, Columbia Co, PA, at 53 years of age. Buried in Pine Grove Cemetery Columbia Co Pennsylvania Father is possibably Ralph Ashton of Point Twp, Northumberland Co, Pennsylvania. He appears in the 1840 census with 3 sons and a wife. In the 1850 census a Ralph (age 47) is recorded but no wife. John (age 15) is recorded as a servant and Alexander (age 13) recorded with William Ammerman. My guess would be that Ralphs wife has died and the family went to live with others. NO PROOF just a guess.

In the 1860 census Point Twp, Northumberland Co, Pennsylvania page 482, John (age 24) is recorded with his wife Sarah (age 19), John (age 2), and Horace (age 5m). John is recorded as a blacksmith.

In the 1870 census Danville, Montour Co, Pennsylvania page 99, John (age 34) is recorded with his wife Sarah (age 30), John (age 12), and Hiram (age 4). John is recorded as a blacksmith.

In the 1880 census Briar Creek, Columbia Co, Pennsylvania page 98, John (age 44) is recorded with his wife Sarah (age 30), Hiram (age 15), and Herbert (age 3). John is recorded as a blacksmith.

John Rake Ashton and Sarah Jane Bishop had the following children:

child + 2 i. John Walter2 Ashton was born February 1857.

child 3 ii. Horace Ashton was born in Pennsylvania 1859. Horace died about 1865 in Pennsylvania. Horace is not recorded in the 1870 census, so I have recorded his death about 1865.

child + 4 iii. Hiram S Ashton was born June 18, 1865.

child 5 iv. Herbert Ashton was born in Columbia Co, Pennsylvania 1877.
