Third Generation

8. Rudolph Smith3 McClure (Samuel2, unknown1) was born in Hickory, Lawrence Co, PA April 18, 1844. The county should probably be Butler since Lawrence Co. PA was not incorporated until 1848. Smith died August 01, 1885 in Wellsville, Allegany Co, NY, at 41 years of age. Buried at Woodlawn Cemetery Wellsville, Allegany Co, NY

He married Rebecca Jane Raymond in Petroleum Center, Venango Co, PA, June 11, 1872. Rebecca was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada March 30, 1846. Rudolph served as a Private in Co.G.78 Regiment Inf. of Pennsyvania Volunteers in the Civil War and is listed as "Smith McClure". He enlisted on July 19 1864 and was discharged on November 9 1864. On his return home from his 100 day tour of duty, he had some sort of an eye infection. Eventually, based on the pension papers, he went blind in one eye. He was also suffering with what the doctor called Neuralgia. The disease apparently affected the limbs, chest and head. Rudolph had a few attacks previous to his death. He recovered enough to be walking around town and soon after reaching his home, he suddenly died. In a doctors report, he states that he could find no evidence of heart problems and noted the cause of death as Neuralgia. The pension for him took over 10 years to process and eventually was granted to his widow. According the the pension request papers, this time, particularly after Rudolph's death, was very hard for the family. Looks as if very little money, if any, was coming into the household.
