Matilda Catherine Rake was born Cordova, Rock Island Co, IL March 23, 1862. Matilda died January 20, 1917
Peoria, Peoria Co, IL, at 54 years of age. She married Henry Louis Grote in Washington Twp,
Westmoreland Co., PA, December 11, 1890. Notes for Matilda Catherine Rake (supplied by Judy Grote): s: Letter written by
Frank R Grote May 28, 1961 to Loubell Grote Green; This letter was written to Loubell to describe several family situations to help her and
her husband, Bob Green adopt a child. "On July 11th, 1897 the next cottage next door caught fire due to a gasoline stove expolsion and
spread to our two flat's basement. We lived on the second floor and I remember coming into the house at that time. My mother was rushing
pails of water from the kitchen sink to the dining room and bedroom windows and throwing it on the fire. Remember my parents came through a
rough period for the steel workers in part of the Cleveland administration and their money was all tied up in that building which was nearly
paid. The next morning, July 12, 1897, my sister was born three months premature and lived only 18 hours. I only saw her in her coffin.
Tho my mother came to Chicago to study to be a nurse in 1890 the reputation then was that only one out of three came out of a hospital
alive. Of course, many were too far gone when they went in. In the fire espisode my mother was injured which caused my sister's birth. I
understand that in those days the shock and other injuries permitted few to escape without death or insanity. With today's hospital
facilities there is no question in my mind that surgery would have corrected the injury and our mother would have been spared to us. This
occured when I was 5 1/2 years old and Louis not quite 2 years. We lost our father due to complication after a fall when I was 13 Louis 9.
Three months after our marriage, April 27, 1916 your Aunt Mae met my mother. Louis and I were preparing to take the mid-nite train Jan 20,
1917 to see her when a wire arrived stating that she had passed away that afternoon."
