RAYMOND Family

First Generation

1. William1 Raymond(4357) was born in Canada 1815. William died 1892 in Wellsville, Allegany Co, NY, at 77 years of age.

He married Louisa Lehman Barr about 1843. Louisa was born in Canada 1818. Louisa died 1894 in Wellsville, Allegany Co, NY, at 76 years of age. In his early years in the area 40 miles north of Kingston, Ont. he made a living as a trapper, and spent winters in a cabin on the shore of Long Lake. Apparently he was a rather hardy person compared to most of us. For instance, he would cut two holes in the lake ice near the cabin and commenced each day by diving into one hole, swimming under water to the second hole, climbing out and running to the cabin. We know, as we are here today as living proof, he always successfully found the second hole. And one moonlight night he was ice skating quite some distance from the cabin when a pack of wolves gave chase. He headed for the cabin and managed to stay ahead of them. He wisely did not stop at the shore to remove his skates, but ran to the cabin and slammed the door behind him. One incident which is recalled, indicated the resourcefullness of our ancestors, is about the change of address they made in the early years of their marriage. They built a small home on the Clarion River in Pennsylvania. They decided to move to a better location downstream. So they disassembled the house, marking the boards by some method, and made it into a raft. They rode the raft to their destination, took it apart and reassembled the house.
