First Generation

1. Benjamin1 Shaw was born in Evansville, Preston Co, WV August 09, 1809. Benjamin died May 18, 1877 in Vernon, VanBuren Co, IA, at 67 years of age.

He married Ann Elizabeth Walters in Evansville, Preston Co, WV, September 17, 1831. Ann was born in Evansville, Preston Co, WV December 27, 1816. Ann was the daughter of Henry Walter and Phoebe Wood. Ann died September 29, 1900 at 83 years of age. In the 1850 census District #5, Babour Co, Virginia page 37, Benjamin (age 41) is recorded with Ann (age 33), John (age 17), Rawley (age 15), Mary Ann (age 13), William (age 11), Phebe (age 9), Eli (age 7) and Sarah (age 4). Benjamin is noted as a farmer and all births are Virginia.

In the 1860 census Vernon Twp, Van Buren Co, Iowa page 20, Benjamin (age 50), is recorded with Ann E. (age 43), William (age 21), Phebe (age 19), Eli (age 16), and Sarah (age 13). Benjamin is a farmer with all births recorded as Virginia.

In the 1870 census Vernon Twp, Van Buren Co, Iowa page 375, Benjamin (age 60), is recorded with A.E. (age 53). Benjamin is a farmer born in Virginia.

Benjamin Shaw and Ann Elizabeth Walters had the following children:

child 2 i. John West2 Shaw was born in Preston Co, West Virginia February 3, 1833. John died January 9, 1852 in Evansville, Preston Co, WV, at 18 years of age.

child 3 ii. Rawley Shaw was born in Preston Co, West Virginia August 27, 1835. Rawley died August 20, 1867 in Keokuk, Lee Co, Iowa, at 31 years of age.

child 4 iii. Mary Ann Shaw was born in Preston Co, West Virginia February 20, 1837.

child 5 iv. William O Shaw was born in Preston Co, West Virginia September 16, 1838. William died June 26, 1910 Canton, McPherson Co, KS, at 71 years of age. He married Laura Delight Evans McPherson Co, KS, June 3, 1875. Laura was born in VanBuren Co, Iowa November 1, 1853. Laura died October 20, 1930 Canton, McPherson Co, KS, at 76 years of age. In the 1870 census Pittsburg Van Buren Twp, Van Buren Co, Iowa page 333. William (age 31), is recorded with probably his brother Eli (age 27) and his family. William is a farmer born in West Virginia.

McPHERSON DAILY REPUBLICAN Tuesday, June 28, 1910 DEATH OF WILLIAM SHAW. William Shaw one of the pioneers of Canton Township, died Monday morning after an illness of three weeks. Mr Shaw was born in Virginia Seventy-one years ago last December. He went to Iowa in 1852 and lived until 1873. When he came to this country and located on the place which has been his home ever since. In 1875 he was married to Miss.Laura Evans, who with five daughters and two sons, one brother, and one sister survive to mourn his departure. The children are Mrs. Grace Kennedy, Mrs. Nellie Coons, Mrs. Mamie John-son of Canton, Mrs. Sarah Wheeler of Liberal, Mrs. Flora Maddox ofTexas and Chester and Walter Shaw who are still at home. His surviving brother and sister Eli Shaw of Canton and Mrs. Sarah Lippencott of Iowa. Mr. Shaw was quite prosperous and besides his homestead, owned land in western Kansas, Texas, and in Old Mexico.

child 6 v. Phebe Shaw was born in Preston Co, West Virginia February 8, 1841. Phebe died September 11, 1868 at 27 years of age.

child + 7 vi. Eli Shaw was born September 12, 1843.

child 8 vii. Sarah Shaw was born in Preston Co, West Virginia October 16, 1846.

child 9 viii. Charles W Shaw was born in West Virginia August 6, 1848. Charles died August 7, 1848 in West Virginia, at less than one year of age.
