He married twice. He married Jane Britton in Warren Co, New Jersey, January 10, 1839. Jane was born August 29, 1822. Jane died October 14, 1839 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, at 17 years of age. Buried at Milford Christian Churchyard Milford, Hunterdon County, New Jersey

He married Rachel H Bunn in Warren Co, New Jersey, July 1, 1841. Rachel was born Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ May 12, 1823. Rachel was the daughter of Matthias Bunn and Permelia Allen. Rachel died September 17, 1896 Easton, Northampton Co, PA, at 73 years of age. Buried at Milford Christian Churchyard, Milford, NJ

In the 1850 cesus Oxford, Warren, New Jersey page 415, Samuel (age 30), is recorded with Rachael (age 28), Spencer (age 7), Josephene (age 3), and Peter (age 1). Samuel is a distiller born in PA.

Samuel Tinsman and Rachel H Bunn had the following children:

7 i. Spencer³ Tinsman was born in New Jersey 1842.

8 ii. Josephine Tinsman was born in New Jersey 1846.

9 iii. Peter Tinsman was born in New Jersey 1848.

10 iv. Moses A Tinsman was born in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey May 4, 1851. Moses died October 26, 1852 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, at 1 year of age. Buried at Milford Christian Churchyard Milford, Hunterdon County, New Jersey

11 v. Mathias Tinsman was born in New Jersey July 4, 1853.
