She was a relative of a friend of mine and I understand that she was raised by the Fisher family after her mother died in a fire. Do you know anything about this story? I am having a hard time in finding her mother and fathers name, possibly because of this tragedy. Any information which you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Richard,

Thanks for your reply. In reference to the Errickson’s, the only other info I have is that there was also a brother by the name of Garfield Errickson. In the 1910 census Lulu Errickson is actually listed as Lulu Fisher, living in Solebury Twp, Bucks County, PA. She was born in 1890 in New Jersey as your relative Sarah Elizabeth was. Lulu, as she was born 6 years later and therefore considerably younger than Sarah, was as I was told raised by the Fisher family and possibly actually adopted and before the different name in the census report. According to the story I was told, there was a candle or lantern on the table and the son (another one possibly) was playing by the table and knocked the lantern on the table which fell and started a fire on the tablecloth. The mother tried to stop the fire, but died from the fire and smoke. I am not sure if the child also died or if this was Garfield. There might be newspaper references to this tragedy, but I haven’t been able to locate any as of yet. As I would love to find out their parents names (Errickson’s) and any other info about them, if you do come across anything in your research it would be greatly appreciated if you would keep me in mind.

Thanks again,

Christine Cassidy Cavanaugh

I stumbled upon your website at http://thegodowns.com/d3/i0014183.htm, and found mention of a Jonathan Everitt, born in Hunterdon Co. NY in 1771. Your website further mentions that he died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

One of my ancestors in named Jonathan Everitt (my g-g-g-g grandfather). He is know to have married Charity Skillman (skilman?) on March 2, 1805 in Hunterdon Co. NJ. and I have verified his address in the North Mulberry Ward of Philadelphia, PA on the 1820 National Census. They had at least three children, and possibly more; I know three of their names – Thomas Skilman Everitt (my g-g-g- grandfather), born born October 20th 1805 died April 21, 1886 in Baltimore, MD (some records say 1803, others ay 1811), and his sister, Mary Jaline Everitt – born April 15, 1816 – died October 29, 1897, and another sister, Elizabeth M. “Lizzie” Everitt – born abt. 1824 – died abt. September, 1890.

Does any of this sound familiar or correspond with records that you might have????

Any information or conjectures you might have would be welcome.

Very truly yours,

Daniel Everitt

In the next house is Urian age 72 Widow born in NJ and parents born in NJ. William Gibson died between 1870 and 1880. No record of his death in Caldwell County, Missouri. Perhaps he died in Jewell County. Carlisle state in his Civil war record that they moved to Jewell County in 1873 & then to Clay County, Kansas in 1880. Uriann probably died in Clay County. In Caldwell County Land records we find William H. Gibson buying land in New York Township. Oct. 3, 1855-May 14, 1856- July 14, 1856. On Sept 19, 1860 William & Uriann sold the property they bought on July 16, 1856 to their son, John Gibson. It appears John sold this same land in 1865, 160 acres. In 1867 Uriann began selling the land by quit claim and to the Sheriff and no more mention of William in the land records. Perhaps William was incapacitated and unable to take care of the transactions. In the History of Caldwell & Livingston Counties, Missouri, by National historical Company 1886, on page 189 we find the following: The next day there was a good deal of burning among the "rebel houses". Clouds of black smoke rolled up in the sky all over what was called the "rebel nest", along Crab Apple. The house of William Gibson was burned. William Gibson, Jr. who went through the war as a Confederate soldier, married Mr. Gibson's daughter-perhaps that was why Capt. C. W. Withers house was burned, but he was in the Southern army at the time, his wife was in Clay county, and the house was occupied by James Thomas, a Union man. This just gives us a little of the horrible things that happened in the Civil War. Caldwell county had first one side coming through and destroying things and then the other side would come in. It is no wonder that William was perhaps ill after this ordeal. It is possible that he may have been wounded also, we may never know. It appears that Uriann was still alive in 1886 when this book was written as mentions her daughter (not William). There still seems to be a generation missing in that Jacob with his listed father would have been 50 at his birth. A Jacob Godown appears in the WFA Colonial Census index of Hunterdon County dated 1741 living in Maidenhead Twp. A Jacob appears in the 1790 census.

The 1737 Loan adds some element of doubt in the way we have this pieced together. By the one statement on his son Jacob, This looks like this Jacob had a son Jacob. Could this possibably be refering to this Jacob as the son??

1728: Made Inventory of John Cumfort with George Fox 1736: Borders Road from Howell's Ferry to the New Meetinghouse (Amwell Minutes) 1737: Mortgages 200a by the King's Road & son Jacob 1741: Amwell freeholder, on jury list

Jacob as far as our research shows us, lived in or around Burlington, NJ in 1703. Purchased 200 acres of land in Amwell, Hunterdon County, NJ about 1707. In the New Jersey Calendar of Wills Vol 1 on page 122 a Jacobe Godowne is recorded as one of the men who did the inventory for the estate of John Cumfort of Amwell Twp. on June 6, 1728. and on page 214 he also did the estate of Thomas Harrison on Jan 3, 1721/22. The name is recorded with the ending "e" on both the first and last names. Some of these references could be referring to his son Jacob, since he is getting quite up in years by the ending reference dates.
