80. Richard S9 Godown (John8, Evans7, Jacob6, Jacob5 Goedowne, Abraham4, Jacob3 Godon, Abraham2, Main Family Line1 Godown)(1341) was born in Amwell Twp, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey February 09, 1787. Richard died March 24, 1876 Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 89 years of age. Apr 11, 1876, Vol. XXXVIII, No. 29, Whole No. 1958 Deaths In Baptisttown, March 24th, 1876, Richard Godown, aged about 97 years.

Lived in Baptistown in the 1870 Census.

He married twice. He married an unknown person. He married Mary Rittenhouse Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, August 25, 1810. IGI has Kingwood recorded as the Marriage place and date also recorded as Aug 23, 1810

Mary was born in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey 1793. Mary(1342) was the daughter of Lott Rittenhouse and Hannah Polly Higgins. Mary died before 1870 Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ. In the 1830 census Amwell, Hunterdon Co page 317, Richard S Godown is living with his family of 7. 1 male (Samuel) under 5, 1 male (Pearson?) 5-10, 1 male (Richard) 40-50, 1 female (Cornelia?) under 5, 2 females (Elizabeth and Ann?) 10-15, and 1 female (Mary) 30-40.

In the 1840 census Deleware Twp Hunterdon Co page 376a, Richard Godown is found here with a family of 5. Living in the household are: 1 male (John) 5-10, 1 male (Samuel) 15-20, 1 male (Richard) 50-60, 1 female (Cornelia?) 5-10, and 1 female (Mary) 40-50. Also recorded on the same page within a line or so is Wilson B Rittenhouse, George Snyder, Jacob Lawshe?, Benjamin Larason and John Ent. Recorded near Richard can we assume that they lived near him also?

In the 1850 census (page 148b) Richard and Mary had in their household in addition to John B, Elizabeth Snyder age 30, Celenda age 12, Sarah age 7. My interpretation of the census records show that Celenda and Sarah had the last name of Snyder not Godown. Elizabeth Snyder is written out followed by Celenda " and Sarah " followed by John B Godown. With a little additional information from the IGI, it is my conclusion that Elizabeth is Richard and Mary's niece and is recorded this way here.

In the 1860 census Somerset Co. Bernards Twp NJ, Page 578, Richard (age 78) is living with the Johnson Bunn family. Because of this record I have added Ann as Richard's Daughter. The Bunn family moved to Minnesota and Richard must have moved back to Hunterdon Co to be with his other daughter Elizabeth.

In the 1870 census, Baptistown, Hunterdon Co, NJ, Richard (aged 88) is living in the household of Elizabeth Snyder. He is listed with the occupation of Pumpmaker.

Richard S Godown and Mary Rittenhouse had the following children:

child 117 i. Sarah10 Godown(1343) was born in Baptistown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co. NJ 1812. Sarah died February 23, 1894 in Baptistown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co. NJ, at 81 years of age. She married David Pittenger in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, June 27, 1853. David was born in New Jersey 1811. (Additional notes for David Pittenger(1344)) i0 In the 1850 census Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 1, David (age 40), is recorded with Livery (age 33), Mary (age 15), Sarah (age 12), William (age 10), Israel (age 10), Virginia (age 4), and Ingham Godown (age 26). David has the occupation of stone cutter.

In the 1860 census Baptisttown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 714, David (age 49), is recorded with Sarah (age 48), William (age 20), Israel (age 20), Virginia (age 15) and Amanda (age 9). David is recorded as a merchant.

In the 1870 census Baptisttown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 227, David (age 59), is recorded with Sarah (age 58) and Gertrude Cross (age 67). They are living right next door to Elizabeth Snyder (Sarah's sister) and Richard Godown (Sarah's father) and the next door is Amanda (David's daughter) and Lambert Dalumple,

In the 1880 census Baptisttown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 63, David (age 69), is recorded with Sarah (age 68), Amanda Dalrymple (age 30), gdau Livera (age 8), gson Eany (age 6), Joseph Wagner (age 15) and George Trimmer (age 40). David is a storekeeper and a farmer and all births are NJ.

Messrs J. R. and Stacy B. Sutton will take charge of the store at present kept by Mr. David Pittenger, at Baptisttown, the first of September 1885.

Sarah (age 38) is recorded in the 1850 census as living in the household of John Bowne (age 82) physician, and his wife Nancy (age 80). She is listed as being born in NJ. I also would guess that because of the ages of the Bowne's, that Sarah may be a live-in household helper.

In the 1860 census, Kingwood Twp Hunterdon Co page 714, Sarah is now married to David and the children of Liverah and David. David is noted as a Merchant with a personal value of 7,000 and a real Estate value of 4,000.

In the 1870 census Baptisttown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, page 227B, a David (age 59) is living with a Sarah (age 58). David is noted as a Farmer with real Estate valued at 6,000 and personal at 2,600.

child 118 ii. Pierson Godown(1345) was born in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey February 1815. Pierson died 1903 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, at 88 years of age. He married Elizabeth Hoffman. Elizabeth was born in New Jersey 1830. (Additional notes for Elizabeth Hoffman(1346)) Parents are probably Richard S and Mary Rittenhouse Godown. That would make him a cousin to Charles although there is not a real good fit in the 1830 census. He could also be Isaac's son based on the research of Albert Godown. Also based on the census, Elizabeth Snyder is the daughter of Richard and Mary and in the 1900 census we find Pierson with his sister Elizabeth Godown (a widow) with the same birth month and year.

A Pierson is a cousin to Charles W Godown and bought the wheelwright business from him that Jacob started but this Pierson is not seen living at Dilts Corners in Deleware Twp.

In the 1850 census Deleware Twp, Hunterdon Co NJ page 110, Pearson (age 34) is working on the farm of George Hoppock.

In the 1860 census Deleware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ page 345, Pierson (age 43) is living and working as a laborer on the farm on Jonathan Hoppock, . Personal property value is $1,000. Charles W is just two families below in the census.

In the 1870 census Pierson (age 55) is living at the farm of Johnathan Hoppock , Sergantsville, Deleware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, working as a farm hand. Total value of property is $1,150.

In the 1880 census Raritan Twp Hunterdon Co page 153B, Pierson (age 64) is living with Elizabeth (age 50) noted as his wife. He has the occupation of farmer. They are living in the household of John and Jane Rodebaugh.

In the 1900 census Pierson (age 84) is living with his sister Elizabeth (age 76) in Raritian Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ. He is not employed, can read and write. and owns his home that has a mortgage. Both of his parents were born in New Jersey.

We know that an Elizabeth Godown Snyder born Sept 1823 was Richard Godown' daughter because of the census. So I have recorded Pierson as Richard and Mary's son.

child 119 iii. Liverah Godown was born in Baptistown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co. NJ 1817. Liverah died 1852 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, at 35 years of age. She married David Pittenger in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, March 18, 1832. The marriage officiator was J. P. Opdycke.

David was born in New Jersey 1811. (Additional notes for David Pittenger(1347)) (See David Pittenger for the continuation of this line.) In the 1850 census Kingwood Twp Hunterdon Co, page 134B, Livery (age 33) is living with her husband David Pittenger (age 40) and children, Mary A (age 15), Sarah (age 12) William and Israel (twins age 10) and Virginia (age 4). David has the occupation of store keeper. Also in the household is Ingham Godown (age 26) with an occupation of clerk.

child 120 iv. Elizabeth Godown was born in New Jersey September 1823. She married unknown Snyder. In the 1900 census it shows her as a widow with no children.

Elizabeth Snyder is recorded as living with Richard and Mary in the 1850 Census at age 30. I have recorded them here because usually when we see someone age 30 with 2 children living in another household, they are usually related in some way. I have recorded her as Richard's and Mary's daughter having maried a Snyder and them having two children.

An Elizabeth is recorded in the IGI as being born in 1820 in Kingswood NJ and having Ralph, Richard, and Mrs Mary Godown as relatives. This is could also be the same Elizabeth the is living with her brother Pierson Godown in the Raritan Twp, Hunterdon Co page 276 in the 1900 census. Elizabeth is 76 and was born Sept 1823.

In the 1870 census Baptistown, Hunterdon Co, NJ, Elizabeth is living with a George Snyder age 9 and her father Richard Godown age 88. Elizabeth has the occupation recorded as dressmaker with a personal property value of $200.

child + 121 v. Samuel Godown was born 1824.

child 122 vi. Ingham Godown was born in Baptistown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co. NJ 1824. There is an Ingham Godown in the 1850 Census, Kingwood Twp, living in the household of David Pittenger (Store Keeper). Ingham has the occupation of Clerk and I would assume working in the Store. He is probably Liverah's brother and most likely Sarah Godown's also since David later married a Sarah Godown. Sarah and Liverah have the parents of Richard S Godown and Mary Rittenhouse. I have included Ingham as Richard and Mary's child because of this.

child 123 vii. Cornelia M Godown(1348) was born Flemington, Hunterdon Co, NJ October 16, 1828. The 1900 census records her birth as Oct 1829. Cornelia died June 3, 1924 in Cannon City, Rice Co, MN, at 95 years of age. Cornelia's death certificate lists the cause of death as bronchopneumonia. She married James Cherry Vanselous Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, January 23, 1847. Married by by Rev. Samuel F. Porter

James was born Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ January 12, 1821. James(1349) was the son of Asher Vanselous and Margaret Cherry. James died March 22, 1909 in Cannon City, Rice Co, MN, at 88 years of age. (See James Cherry Vanselous for the continuation of this line.) On the death certificate, the parents are listed as John G Down and Marie Ridhouse. Researching the Ridhouse name, it can not be found so we have to assume it has been mispelled (probably Rittenhouse) along with John's last name. There is a Marie Rittenhouse listed in the census.

In the 1840 census there is a Mary Rittenhouse listed in Delaware Twp page 365 but this is most likely her married name. She is between 40-50 years old and has 6 children (2 boys 10-15, 1 male 20-30) 1 female 5-10, 2 females 15-20).

In the 1830 census there is a Richard Godown and Mary Rittenhouse living with 5 children. At this point there is 1 unknown son born about 1822 and 2 unknown daughters born about 1817 and 1828. Cornelia would fit into this family. My best guess at this point is that Richard and Mary are Cornelia's parents. Also Richard's father was John Godown.

In the 1840 census Deleware Twp Hunterdon Co page 376a, Richard S Godown is found here. Living in the household are: 1 male (John) 5-10, 1 male (Samuel) 15-20, 1 male (Richard) 50-60, 1 female (unknown) 5-10, and 1 female (Mary) 40-50. Also recorded on the same page within a line or so is Wilson B Rittenhouse.

In the 1920 census Carmon City, Rice Co, Minnesota page 15, Cornelia (age 92) is recorded with Elijah Walrod as his mother-in-law.

Based on the above notes and that in the 1860 census we find Richard living with the Dunn family in Somerset Co, NJ and another reseacher of the Dunn family have Anna Godown and Johnson Dunn married. So this is a daughter of Richard Godown and Mary Rittenhouse. Then in the 1870 census we see Richard living with Elizabeth Snyder, again his daughter. In the 1880 census in MN, Johnson and Dudley Dunn are living with the Vanselous family and Johnson is noted as a Brother-in-law. So I believe we have placed Cornelia with the correct parents.

child + 124 viii. John B Godown was born 1833.

child 125 ix. Anna J Godown was born in Baptistown, Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co. NJ 1834. Anna died 1917 Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 83 years of age. Burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey She married Johnson M Bunn Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, October 23, 1853.

Johnson was born in New Jersey January 12, 1831. Johnson(1350) was the son of Matthias Bunn and Permelia Allen. Johnson died May 22, 1920 Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 89 years of age. Burial at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey (See Johnson M Bunn for the continuation of this line.)
