Johnnie died October 20, 1968 Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, at 84 years of age. The Millville Daily (Millville, New Jersey) 21 Oct 1968, Mon Obituary John A Godown John A. Godown, 84, of Cederville, died early Sunday morning in the Millville Hospital. He was in declining health for several years. Born in Milford, Mr. Godown was the husband of Ethel Hann Godown. Until he retired in 1961, Mr. Godown was a barber in Cerderville for 61 years and maintained his shop in Bateman Hall the entire time. The deceased was an active member of Cederville Methodist Chuch, the church choir and the Frances A. Stanger Sunday School Class. In addition to his wife, Mr. Godown is survived by a son, Emerson, Millville; a step-son James Hann, Millville; a step-daughter, Mrs. Thelma Quick, Alloway; a brother Frank Godown, Millville, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Carll and Padget Funeral Home, Cederville, with Rev. James D. Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Ceder Hill Cemetery, Cederville. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening.

He married twice. He married Blanche L Emerson Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, May 17, 1904. Blanche was born Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ May 2, 1885. Blanche(1618) was the daughter of Horatio F Emerson and Ellen L Bennett. Blanche died July 18, 1959 Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, at 74 years of age. He married Ethel G Hann Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, December 13, 1960. Ethel was born May 2, 1885. (Additional notes for Ethel G Hann(1619)) Ethel died April 30, 1974 Millville, Cumberland Co, NJ, at 88 years of age. The Millville Daily (Millville, New Jersey) 02 May 1974, Thu Obituary; Ethel Godown Mrs. Ethel Hann Godown, 91, of 19 Edgewood ave., Cedarville, died Tuesday at Cumberland Manor where she had been a patient two years. Mrs. Godown was born in Bridgeton, the daughter of the late James and Amanda Simkins. The wife of the late John Godown, she had been a Cedarville resident for 12 years and prior to that had lived in Newport. She was a member of the Cedarville United Methodist Church. Mrs Godown is survived by one son, James S. Hann, Millville; one daughter, Mrs Thelma E. Quick, Alloway; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Teh Rev. Stanley Stanon will conduct funeral services from the Carll-Padgett-Brooks Funeral Home, 208 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton, of Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in the Overlook Cemetery, Bridgeton. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. In the 1900 Census (page 345b) for Union Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, John (age 16) is living with his brother William and family. His occupation is listed as a Farm laboror, he can read and write, and was not employed for 4 months during the last 12 months.

John went to South Jersey with his brothers about 1900 to get work on an Oyster boat. He later settled in Cedarville and ran a barber shop for 61 years in the same building.

In the 1910 census Main Street, Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ page 310, John (age 25) is living with his wife Blanche (age 23) and son Emerson H. (age 5). They have been married for 6 years and have had 2 children with one living at the time of the census. John has the occupation of barber our of his home and they rent thier home.

In the 1920 census Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ page 276, John (age 37) is living on Edgewood Avenue with his wife Blanche (age 34) and son H. Emerson (age 15). John has the occupation of barber.

In the 1930 census Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ page 186, John (age 45) is living on Edgewood Avenue with his wife Blanche (age 42). John was first married at age 21 and Blanche at 18. John has the occupation of barber.

John Arthur Godown and Blanche L Emerson had the following children:

child 427 i. Horatio Emerson12 Godown was born Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ August 28, 1904. Emerson died December 12, 1993 Millville, Cumberland Co, NJ, at 89 years of age. He married Jennie J Hazlett in Cumberland Co, NJ, December 2, 1928. Jennie was born in Pennsylvania October 11, 1897. Jennie(1620) was the daughter of George Alexander Hazlett and Jennie Catherwood. Jennie died April 22, 1997 Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 99 years of age. From 1921 to 1947, Emerson was in the Farm Supply and Hardware business. He had six trucks and brought produce at the Cedarville Action for the American Stores Company. He sold his business in 1947 and retired.

In a letter from Elinor Godown Spinney to Albert W Godown, she states that Emmerson's father was Charles and he has a brother John and a brother Frank P. This information was told to come from Emerson. Need some clarification but research show is to be incorrect in that Charles was his grandfather.

In the 1930 census 24 McNeil Street, Millville, Cumberland Co, NJ page 79, Emerson (age 25) is recorded with Jennie (age 32).Emerson was first married at age 24 and Jennie at 32. Emerson is a buyer/shipper at a produce company.
