Noah died December 26, 1967 Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 81 years of age. He died in the Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg, where he had been a patient three weeks. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Milford and a Milford councilman for 18 years. He is buried in the Milford Union Cemetery.

Noah P. Godown, 81, of Milford, NJ, former borough councilman for 18 years, died in Warren Hospital where he was admitted December 8. Mr. Godown formerly operated dry goods stores in Frenchtown and Milford. Earlier he was employed by the Riegel Paper Corp and even earlier in his life he worked as a boat captain on the Lehigh and Delaware canals. Born May 8, 1886 in Milford he was a son of the late Charles and Alice Pursell Godown. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Milford. Survivors include his widow, the former Emma Melick; five sons, Wilber and Clarence both of Frenchtown; Earl Milford, and Norman and Herbert, both of Reigelsville; four daughters, Mrs. Lillian Pethybridge, Reigelsville; Mrs. Dorothy Hollo, Trenton; Mrs. Edith Black, San Leandro, Calif., and Mrs. Nancy Vegh, Milford; two stepchildren, Harry Kinney, Milford, and Mrs. Arlene Bellis, Bloomsbury; two brothers, John Cedarville, NJ, and Frank Millville, NJ, 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren

He married twice. He married Bessie I Lerch Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, September 22, 1906. Bessie was born in New Jersey May 1, 1890. Bessie was the daughter of Abraham Lerch and Mary Ellen Piatt. Bessie died December 20, 1920 Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 30 years of age. Buried at the Milford Union Cemetery, Milford NJ

The funeral of Mrs. Noah Godown, of Milford, was held at the Christian Church, on Tuesday December 21, 1920. Internment was made in the Milford Cemetery. The pallbearers were Arthur Saylor, Arthur Godown, Joseph Hearn, Harold Brown, David Hawk and Walter Hancey. Mrs. Godown had been ill for six weeks, suffering from an infected tooth. An operation for blood poisoning was performed on her at the Trenton Hospital, with no avail. She is survived by her husband and two sons and two daughters; also by her parents and four sisters, all of Milford.

He married Emma Swope Melick Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, October 15, 1921. Emma was born Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ December 28, 1895. Emma was the daughter of William Melick and Emma Swope. Emma died September 4, 1969 Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 73 years of age. Buried in the Milford Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Emma Mellick Kinney Godown, 73, Milford, NJ, died in Easton Hospital where she was a patient 12 days. Her husband, Noah Godown died in 1967. Born in Milford, a daughter of the late William and Emma Swope Mellick, she resided there all her life. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, Milford. Surviving are four sons, Harry Kinney and Earl S. Godown, both of Milfrord, and Norman and Herbert Godown, both Riegelsville, three daughters, Mrs. Frank Bellis, Bloomsbury R.D.; Mrs. Robert Vegh, Milford, and Mrs. Robert Wegner, Hayward, Calif.; two stepsons, Wilbur and Clarence Godown, both of Frenchtown; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lillian Pethybridge, Riegelsville, and Mrs. Dorothy Hollo, Trenton; two sisters, Mrs. William Kinney, Phillipsburg, Mrs. Althea Meade, Easton; 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

In the 1920 census a farm on Spring Mills Road, Milford Borough, Hunterdon Co, NJ page 266, Emma (age 23 widow) is recorded with Harry (age 3y 6m) and Arlene (age 3m). In the 1900 census Holland Twp Hunterdon Co page 153A, Noah at age 14 was still living at home with his parents when the 1900 census was taken. All the rest of the family has moved on. Noah was still in school.

Noah, and 3 of his brothers (Charles, Frank and John) went to South Jersey about 1900 to work on the oyster boats. Noah later returned to Milford and his 3 brothers stayed in South Jersey, married and settled there in Cedarville.

In the 1910 census on South Delaware River Road in Upper Black Eddy, Bridgeton Twp, Bucks Co PA page 70A, Noah (age 23) is living with his wife Bessie (age 20), and sons Wilber (age 2) and Clarence (age 8 months). They are living in the same household with John H Minder, his wife, son and daughter. Noah has the ocupation of a sewer in a broom factory. He was out of work for 8 weeks during the year 1910.

In the 1920 census Milford, Hunterdon Co, Noah (age 33) is living on Deleware Ave Milford, with his wife Bessie (age 29) sons Wilber (age 12) Clarence (age 10) and daughters Lillian (age 8) and Dorothy (age 2). He rents his home and has an occupation of beater engineer at the paper mill.

In the 1930 census Little York Road, Milford Borough, Hunterdon Co, NJ page 6, Noah (age 44) is recorded with his wife Emma (age 34), Dorothy (age 12), Earl (age 7), Edith (age 6), and Norman (age 4y9m). Also recorded is Henry Kinney (age 13) his step-son. Noah has the occupation of the owner of a fruit market.

Noah worked in the Reigel Paper mill and later had his own grocery stores in Trenton, Milford and Flemington. He also had a bowling Alley in Milford.

In the 1940 census Little York Road, Milford Borough, Hunterdon Co, NJ page 372, Noah (age 54) is recorded with his wife Emma (age 44), Earl (age 17), Edith (age 16), Norman (age 14), Herbert (age9), Nancy (age 8). Also recorded is Henry Kinney (age 23) his step-son. Noah has the occupation of the owner of a produce market.
