Comrade Jacob was commonly known as Jacob. Just as a note, veteran Civil War soldiers were commonly called Comrade and that his real first name is actually Jacob. He had an occupation of a Farmer. Jacob and his family migrated to Ohio after John's birth Feb 22, 1848 and before Sarah was born in 1849. He served in the Military during the Civil War in the years 1861 to 1865. He was enrolled as a Private in company "B" 71st Regiment, Ohio Vol. Infantry on the 24th Day of October, 1861, at Camp Dave Tod, Troy, Ohio. He was mustered into the United States service as such, for the period of 3 years. He was 39 years of age at the time of his enrollment in the Civil War.

On August 31 1862, he is listed as deserted from Fort Donelson, Tenn. In the muster rool dated for Jan and Feb 1863, He is in confinement by sentence of General Court Martial for 4 months and stoppage of pay. In the Muster roll dated for March and April 1863, He was pardoned by General Roseavans for the balance of sentence of one hundred sixty five days. Pay stopped by sentance of General Court Martial. In the muster roll dated April 17, 1863, he is still listed as absent and in confinement at Nashville. May thru December 1863 rolls list him as present. He was discharged on Jan 13, 1864 due to the fact that he reenlisted on January 14, 1864 in the same organization. The second enlistment was at Gallatin Tenn. This enlistment was again for 3 years. Mustered out with Company, November 30, 1865, as a Veteran. He fought in the battles: Shiloh, Clarksville, Fort Donaldson, Cumberland Iron Works, Jonesboro, Lovejoy Station, Columbia, (Duck Run), and Nashville. Source is a copy of a document from the Adjutant General's Office of Ohio signed by Raymond R Galloway on April 12, 1983.

Now with all that said above, there seems there could be two Jacob Godown's in Company B 71st Reg't of the Ohio Infantry. One was 29 at the time of enlistment on October 23, 1861, with fair complexion, gray eyes, brown hair and born in Miami Ohio and was 6ft tall. The other Jacob enlisted January 14th 1864 in Gallatin Tenn. He was 41 years old with Hazel eyes, Black hair and had a dark complexion. He was 6ft tall and was born in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey. There is also one of the Muster rolls that list a Jacob on January 14, 1864 with an age of 31 years old on January 14, 1864. This person was fair complexed, Gray eyes, brown hair and was born in Hunterdon Co, NJ. I am comfused are you??? If we were to say that the age 41 is in error, then possibably we have only one since he would have been 31 in January 1864. On the copy of the enlistment papers dated January 14th 1864, it is noted that this is this persons second enlistment

His Civil War record can also be found in the Civil War Research Database at Ancestry.com
