The 1900 census (page 211a) list his birthday as Nov. 1824 Major died October 12, 1904 Sandy Ridge, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 79 years of age. Buried at Sandy Ridge Cemetery

He married Hester Ann Opdyke in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, March 29, 1847. Hester was born in Barbertown, Hunterdon Co, NJ August 1819. Hester(1436) was the daughter of Benjamin Opdyke and Elizabeth Ent. Hester died 1910 Sandy Ridge, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 90 years of age. Buried at Sandy Ridge Cemetery Charles was a Carriage builder and was active in local government filling serveral offices in the township and in 1878 was elected to the state assembly as a Democrat. His obituary reads: GODOWN - At his home in Lambertville, Oct 11, 1904, Charles W Godown aged about 80 years. Major Godown, as he was very widely known, was a native of Deleware township, and represented the old 1st District of Hunterdon in the Legislatures of 1878 and 1880. He was a gential man very accomodating, and had a host of friends. It is said that a short time before his death the Major asked to be propped up. This was done, and he then distinctly recited from memory the Declaration of Independence. A moment later this old wheel horse of Democracy closed his eyes in death. ******* end of the obituary **********

In the 1850 census Delaware Twp, Hunterdon Co page 103a, Charles (age 25) is living with his wife Hester (age 28) and daughter Ellen E (age 2). Also living in the same household are Andrew Godown (age 18), Samuel Wallace (age 18) Amelia Ent (age 57) and Aisah Ent (age 49). Charles has the occupation of Coachmaker with a personal value listed as $400. Hester's father Benjamin, married Elizabeth Ent, so most likely Amelia and Aisah Ent were a relative of Elizabeth.

In the 1860 census Oak Dale, Deleware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ page 345, Charles (age 35) family are living in . His occupation is listed as a Wheel Wright with read estate property valued at $3,000 and personal property at $1,000. There are 9 people living in the household and included is John Connor who appears to be Charles apprentice. An Elizabeth Opdycke (age 64) is also living with them and I would assume that she is Hester's mother. Just two records from Charles is a Pierson Godown (age 43) and is in the household of Jonathan Hoppock who is a farmer.

In the 1870 census Sargentsville, Deleware Twp, Hunterdon Co page 159B, Charles (age 45) is living with his wife Hester (age 50), His mother Ann (age 78) and 6 children. He has an occupation of farmer with a realestate value of $4,000 and personal property value of $1,000

In the 1880 census South Deleware Twp, Hunterdon Co page 29A, Charles W (age 55) is living with his wife Hester (age 60). Charles has the occupation of carriage builder. Also living in this household are: son Clinton B (age 26), son Lewis C (age 22), son Charles (age 16), brother Johnson J (age 45) and aunt Amelia Ent (age 86).

In the 1885 state census Lambertville 3rd ward, Hunterdon Co, NJ page 9, Charles W is living with Ester A, Charles A and Elizabeth Opdyke. Next door is Clinton B, Emma and Nettie M.

In the 1895 NJ State census Lambertville Hunterdon Co NJ, Charles W (age over 60) is living with Hester Ann (age over 60) and Charles A (age 20-60).

In the 1900 census 46 Delerau? Street, Lambertville Hunterdon Co NJ page 211, Charles W (age 75) is recorded with his wife Hester (age 80) and Charles A (age 36). They have been married for 53 years and have had 6 children with 4 living at the time of the census. Charles is recorded as a day laborer and he owns his home with no mortgage.

child 224 i. Elizabeth Ellen11 Godown(1437) was born Delaware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ August 29, 1848. Lizzie died Lambertville, Hunterdon Co, NJ. She married Jeremiah A Trimmer in Three Bridges, Hunterdon Co, NJ, February 17, 1872. Feb. 20, 1872, Vol. XXXIV, No. 27, Whole No. 1808 Marriages February 17th, 1872, by Rev. E. A. Woods, Jeremiah Trimmer and Lizzie Godown, both ofThree Bridges.

Jerry was born Frenchtown, Hunterdon Co, NJ February 1848. Jerry(1438) was the son of Asher A Trimmer and Rebecca R Hope. Jerry died Lambertville, Hunterdon Co, NJ. (See Jeremiah A Trimmer for the continuation of this line.) In the 1850 census Hunterdon Co page 103a, she is listed with the name of Ellen E Godown (age 2).

In the 1860 census she is not flagged as attending school that year.

child 225 ii. Alice J Godown(1439) was born Delaware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ July 12, 1852. Alice died February 7, 1876 Delaware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 23 years of age. Buried at Sandy Ridge Cemetery Delaware Twp, Hunterdon County, NJ

She married Howard C Pidcock about 1872.

Howard was born Lambertville, Hunterdon Co, NJ April 1853. Howard was the son of Charles Pidcock and Mary Pyatt. Howard died 1912 at 59 years of age. (See Howard C Pidcock for the continuation of this line.) The 1860 census has her name as Alice and other research has it as Allis. Also in the 1860 census she is not flagged as having attended school that year.

Dec. 13, by Rev. R. Thomas, Hiram S. Snyder, of Sergeantsville, to Nettie A. Godown, of Diltsí Corner.

In the 1880 census Delaware, Hunterdon, New Jersey page 3, Hiram (age 28), is living with his wife Janette (age 24), son Cyrus (age 1 month) and Rebecca Trimmer (age 51). All births are recorded as being in NJ and Hiram is a laborer.

In the 1900 census Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania page 79, Hiram (age 48) is recorded with his wife Jennie (age 44). They have been married for 23 years and have had 3 children with 1 living at the time of the census. Hiram is noted a working on the Railroad and Jennie is a dressmaker.

In the 1910 census Lumberville Village, Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania page 140, Hiram (age 58) is recorded with his wife Jennie (age 54). They have been married for 34 years and have had 3 children with 1 living at the time of the census.

child 229 vi. Charles A Godown(1441) was born Delaware Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ May 2, 1864. Charles name was spelled as Godoner in the IGI. Charles died August 21, 1935 Lambertville, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 71 years of age. Charles (age 16) is living at hime and going to school in the 1880 census Deleware Twp Hunterdon Co page 29A.

Charles is still living with his parents in the 1900 census (page 211a) at age 36.

In the 1930 census 100 Ewing Street, Hamilton Twp, Mercer Co NJ page 212, Charles (age 65) is recorded as a boarder with William Wain and his wife. Charles has never married and is a tool sharpener. Him and both parents were born in NJ.
