Thomas died January 25, 1892 in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA, at 51 years of age. He died of bronchitis of the throat, lungs, and heart as noted on the pension application submitted by his widow Mary E Godown. He is buried in Bethel Cemetery, VanBuren Co, Iowa

He married Mary Elizabeth Lenegar in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA, September 24, 1867. Mary was born in Snyder Mill, KY October 31, 1850. Mary(1527) was the daughter of Runnels Lenegar and Catherine Sellers. Mary died January 16, 1933 in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA, at 82 years of age. She is buried in Bethel Cemetery, VanBuren Co, Iowa He joined as a Private with Company H 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Company on August 5, 1862 at age 21.. It shows him on a Company report "Thos. Godown, sick at St. Louis, Mo., Sept 16, 1862".

He was mustered in in August 21, 1862 and mustered out on July 10, 1865 in Mobile Alabama, The service record list 2 children, Ellen D, Hannah Thomas and his wife Mary Lenegar.

In the 1880 census Chequest, Van Buren Co, Iowa page 400B, Thomas (age 39) is living with his wife Mary (age 29), Ella (age 11), Nancy (age 9), Runnels (age 7) and Rasanah (age 5).

She is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Co, KS She married Elias Sanford Thomas in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA, December 7, 1898.

Elias was born in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA March 11, 1874. Elias was the son of John Meredith Thomas and Tabitha J Ellis. Elias died November 27, 1959 in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, at 85 years of age. Buried at Rairview Cemetery, Smith Center, Kansas (See Elias Sanford Thomas for the continuation of this line.) James A Fowler was appointed guardianship of Hannah on March 29th, 1895.

Hannah's obituary read in part:

In 1905, Elias and Hannah homesteaded in Indian Territory near what is now Guymon, Okalhoma. In 1910, they came by covered wagon to the Reamsville community and farmed for many years. They made their home in Smith Center from 1910 until November 27, 1959, when Elias passed away. Hannah continued to reside in Smith Center until September 13, 1968, when she moved to Tieton, Washington to be near daughters Neva and Nina. In the 96 years of her life, Hannah was a hard-working wife and mother. She was a good neighbor and was loved by all who knew her. Most of her life she was plagued by illness and had undergone several surgeries. Despite her hardships and illnesses she continued to have great faith and spent many hours reading her Bible.
